WK 15 Blog Exercise - Interactions Between the 3 Levels

Representational
This is an image of a chemical tanker that looks like a giant cigarette. The representational of it is to highlight the toxic smoke in cigarette. If you say "cigarette" to anyone, they will have an image stored in their mind of smokes, cancer, addiction, etc, from their environment or experiences. From this picture, viewers can think of or know how serious and dangerous of a cigarette is.

Abstract
This is an abstraction of a cigarette. Even though it already is a abstract image of a cigarette, but the shape of it can never be erase. From this image the viewer can see a cigarette cannot be done without smoke. The impact of it can be really serious, like it can affect the grow of children. The abstraction in the photo is symbolic to the meaning and the representation is the whole in the abstraction.

Symbolic

his is a symbol of a cigarette. It is an abstract image that has been given meaning by being placed on a forbid sign. The viewer can see this sign everywhere, it communicates to its viewer a message of no-smoking area. This is an alert for the smokers to not smoking. There are more and more different symbols of SMOKING image for people to quit smoke because it is not only affecting yourself, it is affecting others too.

Visual Information

DESIGNED visual information: Representational, Abstract, Symbolic

Representational - Sculpture

The Statue/sculpture of a police with children represent the protector of the community. The statue was built for a memorial of Hamilton Police officers killed in-the-line of duty. Also, Sarcasm aside, and religion aside, it is still interesting to think that a city’s sculpture may be a reflection of who are the people, or, more likely, who the government is.
Abstract - Sculpture

In Italian, 'Due Anime Deventano Un,' means two souls become one. Without having similar form in any kind of object in the world, and it doesn't retain its realistic, it makes this sculpture abstract. Moreover, The intricate elliptical design was conceived of during the artist's reflection on the meaning of love. The sculpture is focused more on its form, color, and mood to replicate the artist's idea of love.

Symbolic - Sculpture

In budha or hindu, sculpture or a statue is believed to be a symbol of something. For example, Guan Yin is the bodhisattva who is symbolic of wisdom, Ganesha as a symbol of intelect and wisdom, etc. And each parts of Ganesha sculpture symbolize something, such as: Big head - think big, small eyes - concentrate, to pull nearer to the highest goal, large ears - listen more, small mouth - less talk, and so on.

Visual Techniques- week 12

Symmetry
Regularity
Unity
Fragmentation
Simplicity

Balance
Symmetry
Regularity
Simplicity
Economy
Understatement
Subtlety

Both products have their own functions and utilities. They have the same properties in which the products will enhance the atmosphere of a space, but at the same they serve different purpose and task. Furniture and Lamp/Lighting are one of the most important elements in supporting the interior of a building. Therefore, Using the right visual techniques in designing the products will greatly affect the final result. Some qualities are applied to both products, such as: Symmetry, regularity, and simplicity. However, the furniture can be transformed to something else (From a table top into a table with chairs), that also will serve another functions; consequently, another visual techniques can be added to the product. Whereas, the lamp is adjustable ,for its height and angle, but doesn't serve another task.

Contrast

Here is a graphic image using completely contrasting images. A gun is seen as a violent weapon, intimidating, wrong, masculine. A Japanese style fan is seen as delicate, tranquil, calming, cool, feminine. This juxtaposition shows a gun shooting out a fan with a small cartoon skull and crossbones with hearts as the joints of the bones. The character has a slight smile possibly winking with one red heart eye and the other white. This does express the action a gun would actually make. Though, the fan is opened in a similar fashion that the gun would explode a bullet with gun powder shoot out in all directions. The limitation of contrasting colors are powerful. They really state a message a black weapon shooting out a white fan with a red character that could represent an injury that a gun would cause. The image is balanced with lost of motion created by the shooting gun with similar motion created by the open fan. An wrongful action with a message of hope. The fan takes the pressure off of the shooting gun. These two images together makes the viewer think differently about the three images in context.

This album cover uses contrasting tones of black and white. The artist is displayed in a familiar set up using clean white attire, all dolled up for a photo shoot with full make-up and hair. She stands in front of a vandalized wall dripping with thick black paint. This contrast could be successful but due to the juxtaposition of the artist and background are too absolute. The artist is standing too close to the contrasting image. The paint seems to have been thrown at the direction of the beautiful woman. This angle could be interpreted as the paint being thrown at the woman in disgust. Her body language verbalizes this idea even more standing with her face backing away from the thrown paint. I would think this is a disrespectful representation of someone who is obviously trying to show off her talent. These polarities should reflect a artist being able to coincide with both concepts street grunge with classic vocals maybe. This is clearly two different ideas haphazardly juxtaposed together. There is a possibility that the artist and the background was taken at different times. This is no seen a whole concept merging together to represent this woman.

IMPLIED MOTION IN DESIGN

Motion is created in this graphic by an implied motion of applied movement. The figure is repeated in a consistent form as a walking character. The figure walks and leaves an impression of its past movements. A continuous shadow is formed and blurred to indicate motion blur. Each body part is is moved according to actual motion. The arms seem to have been waving as the character moved forward.

The college basketball player above is perceived to be moving because of the diagonal positioning of her body. Imagine the same picture with the athlete standing perfectly upright. The sensation of motion would be diminished or lost as she would appear to be standing still. Diagonal lines are strong visual cues to be used to emphasize motion.

Tone and Color

Tone : the qualities of this picture show vary of tone and color, because there are so many different colors, and different shapes. This poster is big enough to determine what they are advertising. It is showing a new scientist with a lot of designs in his brain. The tone of the poster is from very light then to very dark at the bottom.

Tone & Color : The designer set the tone and color by adding very bright colors to the top and very dark color at the bottom of the poster. The setting is like a invisible line and separated in between, so you can understand what's the meaning of the poster.

Color : Why a lot of poster have to use bright color is because they want to catch the everyone's eye to look at it. I'm sure of one poster of white and gray colors and another with colorful bright colors stick in a subway station, the people will notice more on the colorful poster more than the dark poster.

Color & Scale :the pattern matters too. They want the people to notice the upper part first then on the face because the upper part is with colorful tone and color and the bottom is just a dark face. And the poster is designed like there are a lot of designs, sketches, drawings and pictures pop-out in the brain that no more spaces can load.

Visual Communication Design

SHAPE

This is the Coke logo. Since this brand a very famous brand so i choose this as an example of shape element. Most of the people will use circle as a shape element because almost all the brands are in circle shapes, and I think one of the point is because circle makes people focus on one thing. Because our eyes only can focus on looking at one thing at a time. So circle is like a focus point to get people's attention.

LINE

This is a line element. The type of line announced in the dominant element is repeated in a subordinate group. In this picture, the designer only use line to draw this picture. You can see in the middle of the mirror and the window curtains, those lines are represented the antiquated feeling of the drawing. So the line element in this picture is very important because without it, the picture can't express the antiquated feeling.

MOVEMENT

This is an example of movement element. This picture give me a feeling of tornado. As you can see in the middle of every circle, it is like bottomless pit. Also the designer uses a 3D element and colors to give people a endless feeling.

Syntactical Guidelines

Here is a symmetrical poster. I think everyone know this cartoon.
This image is perfectly balanced because it is a mirror image. A human face is considered to be the most symmetrical thing as both sides are even. It also use a smaller fishes to divide the picture into vertically symmetrical. It sharpened more on the two little fishes of the picture because they are colorful. It definitely attracted my eyes on them at first.

This tree look very unbalanced vertically, it leans more to the right then to the left. It makes me feel like there's a lot of stress between the black rock and the crown. But actually the small black rock is balancing the heavy crown and gives a firmer image to the trunk base in the vertical balance.

Visual vs Symbolic Language

  1. Misfortune
  2. Depressed
  3. Uncertainty-stress
  4. Unemployment rate
  5. Unhappiness
  6. Worrisome
In this picture I can see the worrisome of them all. Some are on the phone, probably is contacting with another company for interview time or ask for hiring. Some are looking at people who are in front of them to see how much longer or how many people that they still need to be waiting. The girl in front, her face expression can exactly bring out the depressing, worrisome and unhappy of the unemployment topic. I can really feel the depressing from their faces. I can't imagine how will I feel if I am one of them.

Wk 4- Visual Puzzle Exercises

This is the first visual puzzle game that I have played. The question is to find out which snake is the shortest. At first I thought it was hard because almost all the snakes look the same. However, I got the right answer. The RED snake is the shortest. If you ask how did i count that out, I can answer you: I don't know! Because I just found it by looking and guessing. First I do is to find the longest, and as you look at the picture, it is so obvious that the BLUE snake is the longest because it seems to cover the most circles. The second is the BLACK snake...Then I got stuck between the GREEN and RED snakes because they have the closest length. Then I use about 10 second to guess which one is the shortest, and I got it right. And actually it is not hard to figure it out. Mckim's concept of "finding" kinda fits into this puzzle because all you need to do is to find the shortest snakes and my finding concept in this puzzle is by looking.

This is the second visual puzzle that I have played. I choose this one because it look colorful. The question about this puzzle is "Which two colors have their total visible areas equal?". Mckim's concepts of "matching" fits into this puzzle because all you need to do is to match shapes. And it is kinda easy. Even more easier than the first one. Because I got it right again in the first time and all you need to do is just compare and match all the shapes.

Wk3 - Feature Hierarchy & Visual Search

The first picture can easily find the feature hierarchies. In this picture, you can easily recognize the disability sign in the middle even though they are in different colors. The other picture above is kinda like a multi-level hierarchies of a treemap, it show different colors, shapes and patterns. The designer mention that a treemap represented as a rectangle, the size of it depends on some attribute of the data. Like if you has a high-volume trades in a day, then your rectangle will be bigger. So you can see there is a lot of patterns inside the shapes. As I understand the Ware's definition of feature hierarchy's of "what" are colors, it is easy to find different colors in the pictures above. But the "where" is a little bit difficult to find or I don't really know what's that mean. All I can find easily and is in different shape and pattern is the disability sign in the first picture above.

Wk 2 - Top-Down Processing

A
B

What is you first image that comes out in your brain when you saw this two pictures?

I believe the picture A is a common top-down processing. Given the choice between the images of two faces or a vase. When I first look at it I saw two faces in a short fixation, then I recognized that there is an illusion of a vase in the middle of the picture. At the same time in the picture B, I saw a rabbit first then a duck. The former of white against dark background prominence the additional factor of two different illusions.
